Bone health is crucial for men because strong bones are essential for overall mobility, strength, protection of vital organs and reducing risk of fractures. While osteoporosis is more common (and more discussed!) in women, men are also at risk, especially after age 50.

After age 70, the risk rises substantially due to declining bone density and increased fall risk.
Men over 75 have a fracture risk approaching that of women, especially for hip fractures, which are particularly dangerous.
Hip fractures in men are more likely to result in complications, longer hospital stays, and higher mortality compared to women.
Bone health is also important to consider for men generally due to:
• Support for Physical Activity: Bone strength supports muscles and joints, enabling men to maintain physical performance, whether for work, sports, or daily tasks.
• Hormonal Changes with Age: As men age, testosterone levels naturally decline, which can affect bone density. Ensuring good bone health helps counteract these effects.
It’s important that men get enough calcium daily:
• Adult men (19–70): ~1,000 mg/day
• Men 71 and up: ~1,200 mg/day
Good sources of calcium include:
• Dairy (milk, yogurt, cheese)
• Leafy greens (kale, collards)
• Fortified plant milks
• Canned salmon with bones
• Calcium supplements, such as Viactiv’s Calcium Chews, which make taking daily calcium enjoyable (these soft chews come in tasty chocolate or caramel flavors)

Men should proactively speak to their healthcare providers about proper nutrients at every life stage.
